Onyx

We met “Onyx” on the most devastating day of her life, June 19th 2020. Witnesses driving down a highway in Kershaw County noticed what they thought was a black garbage bag being dragged by a rope from the truck in front of them. Upon closer examination, they were shocked to discover that it was a dog bouncing on the pavement from the speed of the vehicle. Her limp body was being torn apart by the friction of the asphalt. We responded immediately when we got the call from the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department and rushed to determine the severity of her wounds. When we met her, she was caked in blood from head to toe with nearly all the skin on her chest, knees, abdomen, and side scraped off. Onyx was rushed to Camden Veterinary Hospital where veterinarians concluded that in addition to the catastrophic wounds all over her body, she had also sustained significant chest bruising, lost several toes, and suffered a broken leg. We got in contact with one of our rescue partners, Lowcountry Lab Rescue, who took over her care and she was transferred to Mount Pleasant that same day. Veterinarians worked to administer oxygen, close her wounds from the road rash, and perform surgery that lasted over four hours to save her life. Over the next few months, Onyx endured pain and discomfort as much of her body was covered in bandages that needed to be changed several times a week. She was placed in a foster home while she recovered, eventually learning to walk again. Onyx’s foster home ensured that she received proper physical therapy to regain her mobility and by Christmastime, she was ready for adoption. Her foster family had different plans for her though, and welcomed her into their own family instead. A year later, Onyx (now renamed Ellie) is enjoying her new life with her family. Her days now consist of going on runs with her mom, trips to PetSmart and Target, and spending time with the ones who truly love her. Happy Tails!
